The Importance of Web Site Content

Individual web users and search engines both love finding sites that are filled with rich, pertinent information. The user’s number one goal is to find the information that he or she is looking for; the search engines’ number one goal is to direct their users to sites that will give the user what he or she is looking for. For that reason, it is commonly stated in the web community that when it comes to search engine rankings and visibility, “content is king!”

The text content of your pages is the number one most important factor concerning users being able to find and access your site. Writing useful, keyword-rich content for a web site is something that can dramatically improve search engine visibility. That being the case, we at I-Point Tech want to give our clients a heads-up on what the search engines are looking for so that their pages can generate as much traffic as possible.

The search engines are constantly changing the factors that they use in ranking web sites. However, one thing we know for sure is that text – or the “content” of a web page – is always near the top of the list. For this reason, using affective keywords in the content of your site is extremely important when it comes to its overall success and marketability.

Below is a list of steps to take as you are writing the content of your web pages. Please take a few moments to familiarize yourself with the experiential knowledge that we have gleaned over the years in regards to web site content.

Step One: Brainstorming Keywords
Brainstorm a list of potential keywords for each of your site’s pages prior to writing the content. In this step, you are looking for keywords that you think a typical user, who is looking for your products or services, would type into the search engines. Start with the most obvious terms. For example, if you are a health club, you will want to use keyword terms such as “cardiovascular, gym, workout, fitness, strength training, nutrition, and conditioning.” Actually going to some of the search engines and doing a search for businesses similar to your own is a great tool. What keywords are they using? What keywords are they not using? Write down all of the terms that you think someone searching for a business similar to your own might use. Remember to customize your list for each of your site’s pages with the understanding that overlapping keywords are completely acceptable.

Localized Keywords
If you are a local business looking for clients in a specific location, be sure to use localized keywords, such as “Fort Collins, Greeley, Loveland, and Colorado.” This is a very important factor in search engine visibility for businesses with a local target market. The average person living in Fort Collins is not going to simply type in “health club” or “fitness gym” when he or she is doing an Internet search for a local gym. If they do, they are likely to come up with health clubs that are very far away and will probably end up doing another search using words such as “ Fort Collins health club” or “ Northern Colorado fitness”. For this reason, it is extremely important that the local business, looking for local clientele, include local keywords.

Step Two: Keyword Ranking
Once you have a good list of keywords, rank them in terms of their relevance. Put the “best” keywords – the terms that you think have the best chance of being typed into the search engines – at the top of the list. These are the keywords that you will want to focus on when writing the content for each of your site’s pages. The more content you have that contains the “best” keywords on your list, the better your pages’ rankings will be in the search engines.

Step Three: Writing Your Content
After having brainstormed and ranked your keywords, it is time to start writing the actual prose that will be inserted into your web pages. Try to keep your sentences short and to-the-point. Also, keep paragraphs to one idea each. Keyword repetition, keyword prominence, and emphasized text are also concepts that you may wish to employ.

Keyword Inclusion and Repetition
Remember to include and continue using your keywords throughout your web pages’ content. Increased frequency and repetition of keywords will definitely bump you up in the search engine rankings. If your company name is not too long, it is a good idea to repeat it throughout the pages too. Someone who has heard of your company may go to the search engines and type in “XYZ Inc.” Having “XYZ Inc.” repeated throughout the content of your pages will cater to such users. Putting your address on each page will emphasize the localized keywords, such as the name of your city and state.

Keyword Prominence
The issue of keyword prominence relates to where on the page your keywords fall. Research has shown that the higher up on the page your keywords are located, the better your search engine ranking will be. Going back to our example, if you are a local exercise establishment, your opening line might read something like, “XYZ Inc is a Fort Collins, Colorado exercise and fitness gym specializing in cardiovascular fitness and strength training.”

Notice that this first sentence is loaded with keywords, such as “XYZ Inc, Fort Collins, Colorado, exercise, fitness, gym, cardiovascular, strength, and training.” As a result, someone searching for “ Fort Collins fitness” would be much more likely to find your site, as well as someone searching for “ Colorado fitness,” “ Fort Collins exercise,” or “ Colorado gym.” All of these words are included very high up on the page (the first sentence), thus vastly increasing your search engine visibility. The number of possible search terms is endless based on the fact that all of these keywords are used in the content of the page.

Emphasized Text
Using emphasized text such as bold, italicized, or bulleted lists throughout your pages may also increase your search engine visibility. In addition, it makes pages more user-friendly, being that they are more “scannable”. Someone who sees the words “cardiovascular fitness information” is able to jump down to that section of the text if that is what they are looking for information on. Using bold, italicized, and bulleted lists throughout the content of the page is definitely worth considering.

We at I-Point Tech are always looking for ways to promote and increase traffic to our clients’ sites. If you have any questions regarding website content, please do not hesitate to contact us.
